What is MTProto and how does it work?
MTProto (Mobile Transport Protocol) is a custom encryption protocol developed by Telegram. An MTProto proxy routes your Telegram traffic through a third-party server, hiding your real IP address from Telegram's infrastructure. Unlike VPNs, MTProto proxies only affect Telegram — your other internet traffic remains unchanged. This makes them lightweight, fast, and perfect for bypassing Telegram restrictions in restricted regions.
How to connect to an MTProto proxy
- Click the Connect in Telegram button on any proxy page.
- Telegram opens automatically with a confirmation dialog.
- Tap Enable to activate the proxy.
- Done — your Telegram traffic is now routed through the proxy.
MTProto vs VPN
Unlike a full VPN, an MTProto proxy only tunnels Telegram traffic — it does not affect other apps or slow down your internet connection. This makes it ideal for users who only need to unblock Telegram in restricted regions. The proxy runs on Telegram's own MTProto protocol, so it is optimised for the messenger's traffic patterns and typically delivers very low latency.
Is MTProto proxy safe?
MTProto proxies encrypt traffic between your device and the proxy server using Telegram's MTProto protocol. However, unlike end-to-end encryption in secret chats, the proxy operator can see your Telegram traffic metadata (e.g. that you are using Telegram, not the content of messages). For maximum privacy use secret chats inside Telegram alongside an MTProto proxy.
